A Chat with Mrs. Chrisman...
This week was a busy one at Roosevelt and Alliance. The Roosevelt students held their holiday concert. They had the chance to perform for the Alliance students on Thursday afternoon. They also performed for their families on Thursday evening. It was a wonderful concert! Thank you to Mrs. Allen for all of her hard work. On Friday, both Roosevelt and Alliance students delivered homemade poinsettias to the neighbors of our school. It is nice to drive around the island and see the poinsettias and know that our students delivered them. Upon returning to school, the students enjoyed hot cocoa. It was a great way to end our week!

WARNING! Mrs. McMahon is going to show her age here! Remember in middle school and high school when you would do computer programming? You would type a series of directions (probably using 0's and 1's), hit "RUN," and you would get that archaic, green image on your computer screen to jump, smile, etc? Computer programing -- often called "coding" -- has come a long way! This week was the National Week of Code. Many students at Roosevelt and Alliance (including kindergarteners!) learned how to code/program this week! They LOVED it! Below are some links to the coding websites students used at school this week. Feel free to let them code at home! Why teach coding? It teaches students to think. It teachers students to think about the mistake they made and fix it. It's fun! To create computer programs and apps, takes knowledge of coding. It's where the world is going! http://studio.code.org/ https://www.madewithcode.com/ http://hourofcode.com/us Some great (FREE) iPad apps include: Kodable and Hopscotch Check out some photos and my blog here! http://njsdlibrarygoddess.blogspot.com/2014/12/national-week-of-code-coding-at.html' Virtue of the Month
The students of Roosevelt and Alliance are learning more about the virtue of SERVICE this month. We will be exploring the many ways that people of our community can be of service to others. Each week students will be hearing announcements of 2 or 3 ways they can be of service in their community and school. This week we are learning about how we can share our musical talents with others, and how we can thank the military service members during the holiday season (cards are due to Mrs. Cercone by Dec. 5th). When students' classes participate in a service activity they will add a paper ornament to one of our holiday trees at the school. If your family participates in a service activity we would like you to decorate a paper ornament as well. You will find a copy of ornaments attached to this newsletter or your child can find one in the envelope attached to Mrs. Cercone and Markman's classroom door. Please write your name and the activity you did on the ornament, decorate it, cut it out, and place it in the basket in the office. The cold weather is here! Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the cold temperatures. If your family is in need of assistance, please contact Mrs. Chrisman.
